Es una banda de Power Metal que utiliza el lado épico y fantástico del power metal agregándole un ritmo mucho más rápido, añadiendo sonidos de videojuegos y otros elementos poco usuales. Fue formada en el año 2000, en Londres, Inglaterra.

Todos los miembros de la banda excepto el cantante (Dawson) formaron Dragonheart, que después cambiaría su nombre a Dragonforce. Dawson colaboraría con Dragonforce en una canción de su tercer disco, Inhuman Rampage.

Bajo el nombre de DragonHeart sólo sacaron un Demo llamado Valley of the Damned que un tiempo después, ya bajo el nombre de Dragonforce, sacaron como disco completo. Este demo fue publicado en una página de Internet donde se convirtieron en éxito rotundo captando la atención inmediata de Noise Records. A "Valley of The Damned" (considerado por muchos como su mejor trabajo) le siguieron "Sonic FireStorm" (2004) , "Inhuman Rampage"(2006) y Ultra Beatdown (2008).

Han tocado en compañía de bandas como Distorsión, a quienes les cancelaron en su gira 2006 en Finlandia, donde fueron teloneros de Stratovarius junto con Metal Church, por acusaciones de satanismo. Esto mismo les sucedió a DragonForce en Italia. La organizacíon del festival quedó en ridículo cuando se comprobó el trasfondo bíblico de muchas canciones; por ejemplo "Lost Souls In The Endless Time", del álbum "Inhuman Rampage". Es posible que el error se debiera por la asociación de DragonForce con Demoniac, grupo paralelo bastante más oscuro y enrevesado en el que tocaron algunos miembros de DragonForce: Herman Li y Sam Totman.

DragonForce se diferencia de las otras bandas de Power Metal por la velocidad de sus temas, sus solos rápidos, la influencia de los sonidos del teclado, el uso del blast beat en la batería y estribillos extremadamente melódicos, lo que le da un sello inconfundible a esta banda. La mayor parte de sus letras repiten temas de carácter épico y optimista, con un amplio significado de combate, unidad y fuerza vital.

Con una agenda de giras imparable y constante, Dragonforce ha demostrado ser una banda consagrada al metal, cosa que es muy favorable para ellos ya que prometen algo nuevo y contemporáneo. Su penúltimo disco, Inhuman Rampage, obtuvo muy buen recibimiento por sus seguidores y en marzo de 2007 se publicó la edición especial de este disco con un dvd. El sencillo "Through the Fire and Flames" aparece en el videojuego Guitar Hero III como un tema jugable, quizás el más difícil y largo de la serie entera de Guitar Hero. Curiosamente la aparición del tema en el juego musical, incremento de forma considerable la ya gran popularidad de la banda.

Su disco más reciente es Ultra Beatdown, no supone un cambio muy grande con respecto a Inhuman Rampage, pero es radicalmente diferente a todos sus trabajos anteriores, con letras más significativas,música más frenética y guitarras realmente endiabladas. "Ultra Beatdown" es mucho más progresivo musicalmente con canciones notables, destacando especialmente el bonus track "Strike of the Ninja", el hit "Heroes of Our Time" o la luminosa "Reasons to Live".

Categoría musical

Se puede añadir que, la mezcla única de tipos y técnicas que combina este grupo lo hace un emblema en su categoría: power metal, melodic metal, epic metalen relación con otras bandas como Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica o Hammerfall.

Sin embargo, ellos mismos le han llamado "power metal extremo" (Extreme Power Metal). Este estilo está influenciado por música de videojuegos, por lo tanto a veces lo han llamado "video game metal"[1] o también "Bon Jovi con anfetaminas" como Herman Li comentó en una entrevista.[2] Se caracteriza por el énfasis en armonías con ambas guitarras (por lo cual Kirk Hammet ha dicho que son los guitarristas más rápidos que ha visto[1]), letras con naturaleza épica o fantástica (muchas veces similar a videojuegos como Final Fantasy), ruidos y sonidos de videojuegos, gran uso del teclado y en algunos pasajes de Blast beats en la batería
